random jazz is a practice tool that picks a Real Book tune at random. There are no accounts, and we never ask who you are. Some data still moves around, though, so here is all of it.
1. What we do not collect
- No accounts. We never ask for your name, email or phone number.
- We do not store the songs you draw, the filters you pick, or anything about your practice. The server only reads the song database; it writes nothing about you.
- No ads. Nothing is ever sold or handed on.
2. Cookies this site sets

Both are needed for things you explicitly asked for — keeping your language, and not showing you the banner again. They do not identify you and never leave this site, so we set them without asking.
Separately, we keep rj:tutorial:v1 in your browser's sessionStorage to remember whether you have seen the instructions this session. It disappears when you close the tab and is never sent to a server.
3. Google Analytics
We use Google Analytics 4 to count visits and see which features actually get used. That is all — it is never used for advertising or profiling.
- What is sent: page views, an event when you pull the lever to draw a song, your browser and device type, approximate location (country/city level), and where you arrived from.
- Google uses your IP address to estimate location; GA4 does not store IP addresses in its records.
- Cookies: _ga and _ga_XPV0S1C2JB (2 years each).
If you visit from the EU, EEA, UK or Switzerland, we do not load this script at all until you press “Allow” on the banner. We are not merely switching a signal off — the code is not on the page, so no cookie can be set before you decide. Press “Decline” and it is never loaded, and any _ga cookies already set are deleted. You can change your mind any time via “Cookie settings” at the bottom of the page.
Elsewhere it is on by default, on the basis of legitimate interest. If you would rather it were not, you can block cookies in your browser, install Google's Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on, or just email us at the address below.
4. Legal basis (GDPR)
- rj_lang and rj_consent: strictly necessary to provide a service you explicitly requested (consent exemption under the ePrivacy Directive).
- Google Analytics: consent (GDPR Art. 6(1)(a)) — EU, EEA, UK and Switzerland.
- Server logs: legitimate interest (GDPR Art. 6(1)(f)) — keeping the site up and fixing faults.
5. Who else processes this data
- Vercel Inc. (USA) — hosts this site. As with any hosting, access logs (IP address, timestamp, requested path) are recorded.
- Google LLC (USA) — Google Analytics, only under the conditions in section 3.
- Supabase — the song database. It holds sheet-music facts like titles, composers and keys. Nothing about you is stored there.
Vercel and Google are US companies, so data about EU and UK visitors may be transferred to the United States. Those transfers rely on the data processing agreements and Standard Contractual Clauses (SCCs) each company provides.
6. How long it is kept
- Cookies: as listed in the table above. Clearing them in your browser removes them immediately.
- Data collected by Google Analytics: 14 months, after which Google deletes it automatically.
- Access logs: per Vercel's retention policy.
7. Your rights
If you are in the EU, EEA or UK you have the right to access, correct, delete, restrict or object to the processing of data about you, and to data portability. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with the data protection authority in your country.
In honesty, though: because there are no accounts, we have no way to recognise you in the first place. So the fastest and most certain way to remove what is left is to clear this site's cookies in your browser (pressing “Decline” on the banner also deletes the _ga cookies). For anything Google holds, write to the address below and we will do what we can.
8. Links that leave this site
When you draw a song you get buttons for the lead sheet (Google Images search), a backing track (YouTube search), and opening the tune in iReal Pro. Follow one and you are on that service, under its privacy policy rather than ours.
If a song has a video attached, a YouTube player may appear in the result window. We use youtube-nocookie.com for it, so no tracking cookies are set unless you actually press play.
